Biography

Shehu Buba Umar was born on 2 October 1976 in Nabordo Village of Toro Local Government Area, Bauchi State. He grew up in Newo-Foron, Barikin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State before returning to his native state for education and career pursuits.

He attended primary school locally and later pursued secondary education at Government Day Secondary School Baraya in Bauchi State. His formal academic qualifications include a leaving school certificate from GDSS Bauchi/GDSS Bayara University of Jos, along with higher degrees in Adult Education (Ahmadu Bello University) and Conflict Peace and Resolution Management (University of Jos).

Prior to his political career, Umar worked as a classroom teacher before transitioning into advisory roles. He served as a senior special assistant to former Bauchi State Governor Malam Isa Yuguda and later held the position of special adviser to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Politically active in conflict resolution, he chairs both the Farmers Herders Conflict Resolution Committee at the state level and federally appointed committees. His engagements include memberships with international bodies like the World Food Economic Conference in Berlin, Germany.

Umar’s business ventures include executive directorship for Aquawave Oil and Gas, a role focused on business development.

In the 2023 Nigerian Senate Elections under APC, Umar won the Bauchi South Senatorial District election with 175,505 votes, surpassing Garba Dahiru (PDP) and Lawal Gumau (NNPP). His tenure in the 10th National Assembly has seen him chair key committees such as National Security and Intelligence.

During his time in office, he championed several bills and motions, including cybercrime amendments, security agency reforms, healthcare infrastructure expansions, and social safety net initiatives like CNG bus subsidies for transport relief. His legislative efforts also included proposals for a custom training school and large-scale investments in agriculture, rural electrification, and road upgrades.

His development projects in Bauchi South include building 500 hand pump boreholes, installing solar-powered water tanks, donating motorcycles, tricycles, and sewing machines to communities, and constructing over 50 kilometers of roads. He also upgraded infrastructure with transformers and streetlights across seven local government areas.

His approach as senator emphasizes a ‘Masterplan of Service,’ prioritizing job creation, farming support, rural electrification, and community development in Bauchi South’s predominantly agricultural regions.
