Biography

Abdul Ahmed Ningi was born on April 20, 1960, in Ningi town of Bauchi State and grew up in modest circumstances, working long distances to fetch water for his family. He began farming at age five under his father’s guidance, continuing the practice until today.

He attended Ningi East Primary School (1969–1973) before progressing to Government Secondary School, Misau (1974–1978). After graduating from secondary school in 1978, he completed a two-year pre-degree program at the Bauchi College of Art and Sciences. His formal education culminated with a B.Sc. in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University in 1983—making him the first person in his family to attend university.

Following graduation, Ningi served his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kano before joining Bauchi State Government as a Social Welfare Officer in 1984. He later became Secretary of Bauchi Rent Tribunal and was recruited into First Bank of Nigeria as a banking supervisor by 1986.

In 1992, he joined Hi-Tech Computers as a Senior Administrative Officer before becoming Chairman and Chief Executive of NAJ Resources Ltd., Bauchi, in 1995. His political career began with a contested election under the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) in 1996, which was later annulled by the Abacha regime.

With the return to civilian rule in 1999, Ningi ran for Bauchi State Assembly as a PDP candidate and won decisively, representing the Ningi Federal Constituency. He served two terms (1999–2007), including stints as Chairman of the House Committee on Solid Minerals, NAFDAC Sub-Committee, and Nigeria Football Association.

During his first term in office, he led efforts to unite the House during the Third Term Agenda in 2006. His second term was contested; though initially declared a winner by Salisu Zakari (ANPP), an appeal reinstated Ningi as the rightful victor in 2008. He also chaired committees on the Niger Delta Crisis, Police Affairs, and Jos Constitutional Review.

In 2011, he transitioned to the Senate, running against incumbent Senator Mohammed A. Muhammed (ANPP) under PDP. Despite scrutiny over Muhammed’s representation record, Ningi won the April 2011 election and was appointed Deputy Majority Leader of the Nigerian Senate upon party confirmation.

As a senator, Ningi focused on development projects in Bauchi, including job creation, farming support, and community initiatives. He launched a Graduate Internship Scheme that enrolled over 1,000 unemployed graduates across 20 LGA areas within two months. In partnership with SURE-P, he engaged over 3,000 youths in employment programs.

He also implemented large-scale infrastructure projects: sinking 659 boreholes, installing solar-powered tanks for six LGAs, and constructing a water reticulation system to serve over 100,000 people. His poverty-eradication efforts included donating 1,500 motorcycles, 600 tricycles, and 500 sewing machines to communities.

He established mega Youth Skill Acquisition Centers in Ningi and Misau, training over 1,200 youths in tailoring and craftsmanship. Nine ICT centers were built to promote digital literacy, while the Ningi Scholarship Scheme provided modernized school equipment for 500 primary schools and financial support for hundreds of students.

Ningi’s leadership was marked by controversy, including suspension from the Senate over budget padding allegations and resignation as Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum. Despite these setbacks, he remains a prominent figure in Bauchi politics, advocating for economic empowerment and social development.
