Political Career

Biography

Donald J. Duke, born on 30 September 1961 in Calabar, is a Nigerian politician with deep roots in the country’s governance and legal traditions.

His father, Henry Etim Duke, was one of Nigeria’s most prominent officials, serving as the second indigenous Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service and an influential member of the Duke chieftaincy family from the Efik Kingdom.

Duke attended Corona School in Apapa and Federal Government College, Sokoto before earning his LLB degree in 1982 from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, followed by a B.L. from the Nigerian Law School (Lagos) in 1983 and an L.L.M. in Business and Admiralty Law from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984.

Married to Owanari Duke, he has contributed significantly to Cross River State’s development as its Governor since 1999, steering initiatives in agriculture, urban planning, environmental governance, and tourism.

His tenure included pioneering projects like the Obudu Ranch International Mountain Race, Calabar Carnival (Africa’s biggest street party), and the Tinapa Resort, which attracted international investment over $350 million.

In 2005, he established a state reserve fund to mitigate economic shocks, ensuring long-term fiscal stability for Cross River State.

Despite praise for his leadership, Duke faced scrutiny but was reportedly cleared of federal investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2006.

Initially running for president in 2007, he withdrew to support Umaru Yar’Adua’s candidacy. After a two-year absence from national politics, he declared interest in the 2019 presidential race under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In September 2018, Duke announced his defection from PDP to SDP amid criticisms of the party’s drift from democratic principles.

He was later reintegrated into PDP in June 2021, citing concerns over the party’s core values and urging a return to foundational ideals.

As of 2026, Duke remains active within PRP and is officially nominated for the 2027 presidential elections.
