Donald Duke

Donald Duke was born on 30 September 1961 in Calabar and is a Nigerian politician with a distinguished career spanning over three decades.

He served as the Governor of Cross River State from May 1999 to May 2007, overseeing significant developments in agriculture, urban development, environment, investment, and tourism. His administration transformed Calabar into one of Nigeria’s cleanest cities.

Duke’s background includes a family legacy rooted in public service—his father was the second indigenous Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service—a position held by his grandfather before him. The Duke family is part of the Efik Kingdom’s most influential ruling dynasty.

He attended Corona School, Ikoyi, and Federal Government College, Sokoto before earning an LLB from Ahmadu Bello University in 1982, a B.L. from Nigerian Law School in Lagos (1983), and an LLM in Business and Admiralty Law from the University of Pennsylvania (1984).

Married to Onari Duke, he spearheaded initiatives like the Obudu Ranch International Mountain Race, Calabar Carnival, and Tinapa Resort Project—a $350 million investment aimed at boosting tourism. He also established a state reserve fund to cushion economic shocks.

Despite praise for his governance, no major legal investigations have been publicly linked to him, though he was one of four governors reportedly cleared by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2006.

In politics, Duke initially ran for presidency in 2007 but withdrew in favor of Umaru Yar’Adua. He later expressed interest in running again in 2019, declaring his candidacy under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after defecting from PDP in 2018.

By June 2021, he was officially re-admitted to the PDP, citing party deviations from core principles as his reason for leaving. His 2027 presidential bid remains a nomination under PRP as of mid-2026.
