Biography

Kawu Suleiman Abdurrahaman, known as Kawu Sumaila (OFR), was born on March 3, 1968 in Sumaila Village, Kano State.

He began his education at Sumaila Gabas Primary School and later obtained a Senior Secondary School Leaving Certificate from Sumaila Secondary School in 1988.

His early academic qualifications include a Diploma and Advance Diploma in Educational Management from Bayero University Kano (BUK).

He pursued further studies through the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies. Additional degrees include a Master's in Development Studies from BUK, and a PhD in Political Science from Al-Qalam University Katsina.

Kawu Sumaila has undertaken short courses at prestigious institutions like Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, and Bayero University Kano.

His political career began in 1991 with affiliations to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), merging later into the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He served as Deputy State Organizing Secretary for PDP in Kano and contested multiple times as a House of Representatives candidate under different parties.

In 2019, he joined APC and ran for the House of Representatives, ultimately contesting successfully for the Kano South Senatorial District in the 2023 Senate elections, where he won.

He has held various roles such as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) since 2023 and previously served as a member of the Kano State Library Board and NAPEP’s local government monitoring committee.

Kawu Sumaila’s legislative contributions include advocating for constitutional amendments, addressing issues like extrajudicial killings, airport conditions, and public health crises such as meningitis.
