Udom Gabriel Emmanuel

Udom Gabriel Emmanuel was born on 11 July 1966 in the family of Ette Gabriel Emmanuel Nkanang, originally from Awa Iman in Onna Local Government, Akwa Ibom State. He began his early religious involvement as a Sunday school leader at United Evangelical Church (QIC).

Emmanuel transitioned from religious leadership to banking, serving as a bank director and later as an audit manager at Price Waterhouse Coopers. He holds qualifications as a Chartered Accountant and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management. He attended the Advanced Management Programme at INSEAD, France, and earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Lagos in 1988.

His professional career included roles as chief financial officer and group head of Income Optimization at Zenith Bank, where he also served as general manager and executive director. He joined Zenith Bank in 1996 from Diamond Bank Limited, specializing in telecommunications and financial planning. His experience spans over seventeen years in financial services.

Emmanuel’s political ascent began in 2013 when he was appointed secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government. In 2014, he won the PDP’s primary election to challenge for the governorship, defeating 22 competitors. He was elected governor in 2015, winning 999,071 votes against APC’s Umana Okon Umana’s 89,865 votes, declared by INEC.

Re-elected in 2019 with 519,712 votes, he implemented the Tupocracy system of governance. His administration faced scrutiny over budget irregularities, including inflated expenses for vehicles, aviation, and other allocations, which critics linked to corruption. Investigations revealed discrepancies in budget overruns, including questionable purchases like Toyota Prados and the maintenance of a private plane.

Emmanuel’s tenure saw controversies such as mismanagement in Peacock Paints Limited, a state-owned company, and unexplained allocations under ‘Government Special Development Projects,’ with no verifiable outcomes. The Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the House of Assembly later called for investigations into these allegations.

In 2021, the Uyo Capital City Development Authority threatened to demolish a church owned by Holy Ghost Ambassadors Ministry, citing planning violations. The EFCC later invited Emmanuel for an investigation in 2025, though no formal charges were filed by that time. Despite controversies, he received awards like the 2016 Leadership Award for Best Governor of the Year and the 2022 African Industrial Development Award.
