Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami

Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, known as Isa Ali, is a Nigerian politician and Islamic cleric with a career spanning academia, religious leadership, and public service.

He served as Minister of Communications and Digital Economy from 2019 to 2023 after being appointed Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) from September 26, 2016, until August 20, 2019.

Before entering politics, Pantami was a lecturer in Information Technology at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, and later served as Head of Technical Writing at the Islamic University of Madinah. He was promoted to professor by FUTO’s Governing Council in August 2021.

His tenure as Minister saw policy changes, including SIM card registration reforms aimed at limiting subscribers to three active SIMs, which drew criticism from Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, who threatened him over perceived restrictions on mobile access.

Pantami chaired the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum in 2022 and holds fellowships with the British Computer Society and Nigeria Computer Society. His academic work includes contributions to cybersecurity, digital economy development, and counterterrorism through technology.

His early sermons and public statements—including support for extremist groups like the Taliban and al-Qaeda—sparked controversy, particularly after a 2019 academic study linked his past rhetoric to Boko Haram ideology. He later denied condoning terrorism but faced calls for resignation from opposition parties and civil society.

Pantami has authored books on ICT sector development, cybersecurity, and academia, while his leadership as Minister drew mixed reactions due to perceived ideological inconsistencies and controversial responses, including a disputed Facebook reply that fueled accusations of incitement.

Despite backlash, he was officially supported by President Muhammadu Buhari’s office, though ongoing scrutiny persists over allegations linked to extremist associations and political opposition demands for accountability.
