Political Career
Biography
Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, known as Isa Ali, is a Nigerian politician and Islamic cleric with a career spanning academia, government service, and digital policy leadership.
He served as Minister of Communications and Digital Economy from 2019 to 2023 after being appointed Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) since September 2016.
Before his political career, Pantami was a lecturer in Information Technology at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University and later served as Head of Technical Writing at the Islamic University of Madinah.
He became one of seven readers promoted to professor by the Federal University of Technology Owerri in 2021, though this promotion sparked controversy over alleged irregularities in Nigeria’s academic appointments.
His tenure as Minister included implementing SIM card registration reforms aimed at curbing fraud and limiting subscribers to three active cards, which drew criticism from Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, who threatened him for the policy.
Pantami has faced allegations linked to his past sermons, including support for extremist groups like the Taliban and al-Qaeda in the mid-2000s, as well as a 2004 incident where his sermons allegedly contributed to violence at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University.
An article claiming he had debated with Boko Haram’s Mohammed Yusuf was retracted after investigations found no evidence of a friendly exchange, though Pantami denied condoning terrorism and accused the authors of bias.
Audio recordings from his sermons in the 2000s—including calls for jihad and sympathy toward Boko Haram members—were later referenced in an academic study on the group’s ideology, reigniting debates over his qualifications for public office.
Despite controversy, Pantami has authored books on cybersecurity, digital economy development, and counterterrorism, while also chairing the World Summit on the Information Society Forum since 2022.
His political career includes a brief tenure as an ATBU Imam in 2004, where his sermons reportedly fueled religious tensions that led to student deaths and campus clashes. His responses to critics, including offensive Hausa remarks, have further inflamed public opinion.
