Biography

Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari (born 1967), popularly known as Engr, is a mechanical engineer and a Nigerian politician who has served as Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly since 5 December 2020.

Right Honourable Chidari was born in Chidari village of Makoda Local Government Area of Kano State. He attended Batta Primary School, Dambatta between 1975 and 1981, then Government Secondary School, Dambatta between 1981 and 1986.

He also attended College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies (CAS) between 1986 and 1988, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano in 1992.

After his National Youth Service Corps in 1993, he worked with Moland Communication Limited in Ibadan and ABG Communications Limited in Kaduna between 1993 and 1996, where he joined politics in 1996.

Chidari was elected Chairman of Makoda Local Government Area under the military administration of Colonel Dominic Oneya during the 1996 Local Government Election, when General Sani Abacha was President.

He was first elected as a member of the Kano State House of Assembly in the 1999 Nigerian general election. In 2003, he lost his seat, but regained it in the 2007 election and retained it in the following elections: 2011, 2015, and 2019.

He served as Deputy Speaker in the circle of principal officers of the Kano State House of Assembly. He voluntarily stepped down from the Deputy Speaker position in 2017 due to a crisis in the House, allowing Kabiru Alhassan Rurum to return to the principal office.

After Rurum’s resignation as Speaker in July 2017, Chidari returned to the Deputy Speaker position immediately after the impeachment of Yusuf Abdullahi Ata in July 2018.

Following the resignation of Speaker Abdulaziz Garba Gafasa on 14 December 2020, Chidari was elected Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly on 15 December 2020.
