Sowore Omoyele Stephen

Omoyele Yele Sowore, born on February 16, 1971 in Ondo State, Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, is a prominent political figure, human rights activist, and journalist known for his advocacy of democratic governance and anti-corruption efforts.

His activism began during Nigeria's military rule, where he became deeply involved in student protests against economic policies imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). These early struggles marked his commitment to challenging government injustices and advocating for democratic transitions.

Sowore studied Geography and Planning at the University of Lagos from 1989 to 1995, extending his studies due to repeated expulsions linked to political activism. He later earned a master’s degree in Public Administration from Columbia University, solidifying his academic background in public policy and governance.

A key figure in Nigeria’s democratic movement, Sowore led student protests against the government’s actions, including the 1993 struggle for democracy during military rule. His leadership during these events earned him recognition as a vocal advocate for civil rights and democratic reforms.

Inspired by the need to expose corruption and misconduct in governance, Sowore founded Sahara Reporters in New York City in 2006—a citizen journalism platform that investigates government abuses without financial support from Nigerian authorities. The organization remains independent, relying on grants like those from the Ford Foundation and Omidyar Network.

Sowore’s political career includes founding the African Action Congress (AAC) in August 2018, positioning himself as a candidate for presidential elections. His 2019 bid was marked by arrests during protests calling for nationwide revolution, including detentions under allegations of treason and human rights violations.

After multiple legal battles—including bail orders and court-ordered releases followed by re-arrests—Sowore faced restrictions on travel outside Abuja due to judicial rulings. Despite these challenges, his activism persisted, with ongoing legal cases addressing violations of fundamental rights and unlawful detentions.

Beyond politics, Sowore’s personal life reflects resilience. Raised in a polygamous family in the Niger Delta region, he overcame hardship by learning to fish at age 12 to support his family before pursuing education. His experiences shaped his dedication to fighting systemic injustices, both as an activist and a candidate for public office.

Sowore’s involvement in international advocacy extends beyond Nigeria. His wife, Opeyemi Sowore, has led global protests against his detention, drawing condemnation from human rights organizations worldwide. The couple has also lived abroad, including in the United States, where they continue to operate as residents of Haworth, New Jersey.
