Biography

Simon Ajibola was elected Senator for the Kwara South Senatorial District in June 2004 and was reelected in 2007, serving as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He earned a graduate degree in Quantity Surveying from Ahmadu Bello University in 1979. He participated in the National Constitution Conference between 1994–1995.

During the transitional period under General Sani Abacha, he ran for Senate on the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNPP) ticket and won, though the election was later annulled with Abacha’s death in June 1998. After democracy returned in 1999, he served as Federal Commissioner for Revenue Mobilization, Allocation & Fiscal Commission from 2001–2002.

He initially ran and lost against Suleiman Makanjuola Ajadi of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in April 2003 but was later declared elected after an overturned election petition in June 2004. He continued to serve until his reelection in 2007.

Ajibola held key committee assignments, including Water Resources, Upstream Petroleum Resources, Security & Intelligence, and Agriculture. Evaluations noted limited legislative engagement but effective committee work.

He ran again for the Kwara South Senate seat in April 2011 and was returned for a third term. In December 2014, he secured the PDP primaries to challenge Abdulfatah Ahmed for the 2015 Kwara State gubernatorial election.

Despite initial polling favoring Abdulfatah Ahmed, Ajibola contested the results in court but lost his case, with a judge ruling he lacked standing to sue.
