Biography

Ibrahim Shekarau was born on 5 November 1955 in the Kurmawa quarters of Kano and comes from a family where his father served as a police officer. He began his education at Gidan Makama Primary School between 1961–1967, followed by Kano Commercial College (1967–1973). His academic journey continued at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he earned a Lower Diploma in Mathematics Education with distinction in 1975 and a Higher Diploma in Mathematics with credit in 1977.

Shekarau started his professional career as a mathematics teacher at Government Technical College, Wudil, in 1978. Over the next decade, he held successive principal positions across various schools, including Government Day Junior Secondary School (Wudil), Government Secondary School Hadejia, and Government College Birnin Kudu before moving to Rumfa College in March 1988.

His administrative career progressed through roles in the Ministry of Education and later as Permanent Secretary in the General Service Directorate of the Cabinet Office. He briefly served at the Civil Service Commission before returning to academia as Chief Lecturer (Mathematics) at the State College of Arts, Science, and Remedial Studies (CASRS), where he stayed until voluntarily retiring from the Kano State Civil Service on 2 October 2001.

After retiring from government service, Shekarau worked as a secretary to businessman Aminu Dantata before entering politics. His political ascent began with his gubernatorial bid in Kano’s 2003 elections, where he was elected governor and re-elected in April 2007. During his tenure, he opposed polio vaccination campaigns on religious grounds, though the World Health Organization denied allegations of infertility intent.

As Governor, Shekarau championed large-scale development projects in Kano State and established the Hisbah Guardβ€”a local enforcement body enforcing Sharia law. He also hosted prominent world leaders like former German Chancellor Gerhard SchrΓΆder and Prince Charles. The Emir of Kano later conferred upon him the title of Sardauna of Kano.

Shekarau was a presidential aspirant in Nigeria’s 2011 elections but did not secure the presidency, with Goodluck Jonathan winning instead. His political affiliations have fluctuated: he defected from APC to NNPP in May 2022 before joining PDP three months later.

Despite his party switches, Shekarau remains a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, known for his grassroots development work and advocacy of Sharia-based governance. His tenure as governor laid foundations for future political engagements.
