Ogar John

John Ogar Odey (1 November 1959 – 7 October 2018) was a Nigerian politician and media professional who served as Minister of Information and Communications in July 2007 and Minister for the Environment in December 2008 under President Umaru Yar'Adua’s cabinet.

Odey graduated with a B.Sc. in banking and finance from the University of Calabar in 1986. He had a long career in media, holding roles such as General Manager for South-South Communication and Chairman of the News Agency of Nigeria.

He was appointed National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2004. In his political career, he served as Minister of Information and Communications and later as Minister for the Environment before handing over responsibilities to the permanent secretary in March 2010.

Odey died on 7 October 2018 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from cancer-related illness. His remains were returned to Nigeria for burial in Okpoma, Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, on 6–7 November 2018, amid public tributes.
