Biography

Peter Gregory Obi (born 19 July 1961) is a Nigerian politician and businessman who served as the governor of Anambra State from 17 March 2006 until his impeachment on 2 November 2006. Reinstated on 9 February 2007, he continued his tenure until 2010 when he was re-elected for a second term which ended on 7 March 2014. A member of the African Democratic Congress since 2025, Obi was the presidential candidate for Labour Party in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election.

Born in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria, Obi attended Christ the King College in Onitsha and University of Nigeria in Nsukka for his secondary and tertiary education, respectively. He worked as a banker before becoming a full-time politician following his contest in the 2003 Anambra State gubernatorial election under APGA. He was defeated by Chris Ngige but Ngige's victory was later annulled by the court, hence declared Obi as the winner. He started his administration on 17 March 2006.

Obi was removed from office by the state legislature on 3 November 2006, citing 'gross misconduct.' His deputy, Virginia Etiaba, replaced him as the first female governor in Nigeria. Obi was reinstated after a court ruling. He was re-elected for a second term in 2010, serving until 17 March 2014, when he passed power to Willie Obiano. Under PDP, Obi sought the Nigerian vice presidential nomination in 2019, but lost to Muhammadu Buhari of APC with Atiku Abubakar as his presidential candidate.

Obi defected to Labour Party in 2022 after Patrick Utomi withdrew his presidential ticket for him during the party's primary election. He selected Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election, but they lost to Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima. His campaign was described as populist, with supporters like the 'Obidients' and 'Village Movement.' Obi was born to a devout Christian family from Agulu, and his secondary education was at Christ the King College, Onitsha, where he obtained a WAEC certificate.

In 1980, Obi enrolled in the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, where he studied Philosophy until graduation in 1984. He later attended business schools such as Lagos Business School, International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland, Harvard Business School, Saïd Business School in England, Cambridge Judge Business School, and Kellogg School of Management. He contested for the Governor of Anambra State under APGA in 2003, and his election victory was later confirmed by the court after Ngige’s annulment.

Obi was impeached by the Anambra State House of Assembly on 2 November 2006, citing graft and abuse of office. His impeachment was declared illegal by the Supreme Court, and he was reinstated on 14 June 2007. The impeachment was part of a broader legal challenge involving several governors in 2006. He later criticized the impeachment as 'an illegal and unconstitutional act,' noting that he was not informed and lacked defense opportunities.

During the 2023 presidential election campaign, Obi’s supporters held the One Million Man Marches in various Nigerian cities. His focus on frugality, economic accountability, and education resonated with young voters, creating a significant political movement. Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2025 was announced at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, citing patriotism and national interest. His defection sparked debates about his future political alignment and leadership credibility.

Obi’s business background and third-party candidacy have drawn comparisons to Emmanuel Macron’s successful French presidential run. His supporters, often young, expressed their backing through social media, protests, and street marches. In 2022, he selected Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as his running mate, emphasizing shared visions and commitment to Nigeria’s productivity. The election results placed him third, with 6.1 million votes, behind Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.

Obi has been vocal on issues like education, health, and economic accountability. He criticized President Tinubu’s tax policies, emergency response failures, and foreign debt cancellations, emphasizing the need for fiscal prudence and investment in critical sectors. His advocacy for education includes donations to schools and calls for reform in Nigeria’s correctional centers, where he pledged to fund inmates’ exams. He also condemned recent terrorist attacks and student arrests as unjust responses to insecurity.

Recent controversies include allegations of offshore shell companies (e.g., Beauchamp Investments Limited, Gabriella Investments Limited) tied to Obi’s family, which he denies violating any laws. He clarified that these accounts were from his business days and not political office. Additionally, he responded to claims of doctored audio regarding his 2023 election call, stating it was fabricated. Obi has faced scrutiny over his political career, including impeachment, election challenges, and allegations of corruption.

Obi has received awards for his governance, including Man of the Year (2007, 2014), Most Prudent Governor (2009), and Best Performing Governor on Immunization (2012). He was also recognized by the Lagos Business School Alumni Association (2014) and the Nigerian Library Association (2013). His 2023 presidential campaign drew global attention, with his populist message appealing to a broad base of voters.

As of 2026, Obi’s political trajectory remains uncertain, with ongoing debates about his defection to ADC, his role in future elections, and his stance on major political issues. His criticisms of President Tinubu’s policies and his focus on accountability have kept him a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. Supporters continue to rally behind him, while critics question his leadership credibility and alignment with national interests.
