Bio
Peter Gregory Obi (born 19 July 1961) is a Nigerian politician and businessman who served as governor of Anambra State from 17 March 2006 until his impeachment on 2 November 2006, was reinstated on 9 February 2007, and continued in office until 2010, when he won re-election for a second term that ended on 7 March 2014. He was the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election and is described here as a member of the African Democratic Congress since 2025.
Born in Onitsha, Anambra State, Obi attended Christ the King College, Onitsha, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He worked as a banker before entering full-time politics through APGA in the 2003 Anambra governorship race. Although initially defeated by Chris Ngige, the court later annulled that victory and declared Obi winner; he assumed office on 17 March 2006, was removed by the state assembly on 3 November 2006 for "gross misconduct," and returned to office after a court ruling on 9 February 2007. Following re-election on 17 March 2010, he handed over to governor-elect Willie Obiano on 17 March 2014.
Under the PDP, Obi sought the vice-presidential nomination in 2019 and, with Atiku Abubakar, lost to Muhammadu Buhari of the APC. He moved to the Labour Party in 2022 after Patrick Utomi gave up his presidential ticket for him in the primaries, chose Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as running mate for 2023, and lost to Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima. His 2023 presidential campaign was widely described as populist and energized supporters known as the "Obidients."
