Biography
Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, born on 13 December 1967, is an Ikwerre politician and lawyer from Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State. He has served as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory since 2023 and previously held the governorship office of Rivers State from 2015 to 2023.
Known as 'Mr Project,' Wike is recognized for his contributions to infrastructural development. He began his political career as Executive Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area, a position he held from 1999 until 2007.
Wike earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUT) and later obtained a Master of Arts in Political and Administrative Studies from the same institution. He also holds an honorary doctorate degree in Law from the University of Calabar, awarded in 2025.
He served as Minister of State for Education between July 2011 and September 2013 under President Goodluck Jonathan before stepping down to contest for governor in Rivers State. His appointment was followed by a legal challenge over election fraud allegations during the 2015 gubernatorial elections, which led to his election being nullified.
Despite this setback, Wike won the 2019 governorship elections with 886,264 votes, reaffirming his political ambitions. His tenure saw significant infrastructural projects, including the construction of multiple flyovers in Port Harcourt and policies aimed at improving education access.
Wikeβs career includes roles such as Acting Minister of Education after Ruqayyah Ahmed Rufa'i resigned to campaign for governor. He was later appointed Deputy Governor alongside Ipalibo Banigo before winning his own gubernatorial election in 2014 against Dakuku Peterside and Tonye Princewill.
In 2022, he ran unsuccessfully for the PDP presidential ticket, losing to Atiku Abubakar. His political rivalry with Atiku led to tensions within the party, culminating in Wikeβs appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under President Bola Tinubuβs administration in 2023.
Wike has faced controversies, including disputes over land rent enforcement and allegations against his successor Sim Fubara. His policies also included free education initiatives and legal measures to strengthen women's property rights.
