Nnamani Chimaroke Ogbonnia is a Nigerian politician who contested the 2019 Senate Elections as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Enugu.

Biography

Chimaroke Nnamani (born 30 May 1960) is a Nigerian medical doctor and politician from Enugu State. He was elected Governor of Enugu State in the 1999 Enugu State gubernatorial election from 1999 to 2007.

Subsequently, he served as a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator for Enugu East Senatorial District from 2007 to 2011 and was re-elected in 2019. Though born in Port Harcourt, he hails from Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

He attended Methodist Primary School, Enugu, and the College of the Immaculate Conception (CIC), also in Enugu. He is a graduate of the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria (Enugu Campus).

His medical post-graduate training included the State University of New York and Inter-faith Medical Center/Down State Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York (Obstetrics and Gynecology).

Further training continued at Perinatal Biology Center, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, Southern California; Molecular Biology and Tissue Cytology Laboratory, Jerry 'L' Pettis Veterans Administration Hospital, Loma Linda, California; and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Loma Linda University (with specialization in maternal fetal medicine).

His research interests include gap junction physiology, cell-to-cell communication via connexin proteins, tissue cytology, molecular biology, and prenatal biology. Clinical interests focus on premature labor, prematurity, high-risk pregnancy, obstetrics ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, and genetics.

He has published research in major scientific journals and presented abstracts at notable scientific meetings, including an entry in Biology of Reproduction (1994).

He was a member of several professional societies, including the Society for Perinatal Obstetricians, American Society for Cell Biology, Society for Gynecologic Investigations, and American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine.

Dr. Nnamani’s first political foray was as the National President of the Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NIMSA). He was elected Governor of Enugu State and re-elected for a second term in 2003.

During his eight-year tenure, he oversaw groundbreaking projects such as the permanent campus of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, and the Ebeano Tunnel.

He established four district hospitals and 19 cottage hospitals, rehabilitated healthcare facilities with UK’s DFID under PATHS I & II, and transformed the Parklane General Hospital into ESUT Teaching Hospital.

His administration improved rural roads, electrified over 130 communities, and enhanced water supply infrastructure across Enugu State.

Reforms in locality administration included creating 56 development centers, 39 new headquarters, and 200 autonomous communities, expanding governance to grassroots levels.

He established the Ministry of Poverty Reduction and Human Development, alongside projects like LEEMP (World Bank/UK-funded rural development).

Academically, he holds honors such as Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, D.Sc. (Honoris Causa) from the University of Nigeria, and Adjunct Professor at Babcock University.

Known for intellectual engagements, he delivered lectures on Nigeria’s democracy, Igbo heritage, and national development at various forums across the country.
