Biography

Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed (born 5 October 1958) is a Nigerian politician of Hausa ethnicity who began his career in journalism before transitioning into the civil service. His academic qualifications include a WAEC School Certificate, a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Maiduguri, and advanced-level testimonials from North East College of Art and Science.

He attended Duguri Primary School in Bauchi (1965–1971) before completing secondary education at Government School Bauchi (1972–1976). His professional journey included roles as a journalist—such as news editor for Mirage, reporter for NAN, and state editor of Democrat—before entering the civil service.

From 1982 onward, Mohammed advanced rapidly through administrative posts in federal ministries, including chief supplies officer at the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals (1995–2005) and director of administration at agencies like the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. He retired voluntarily from the civil service as a director.

His political trajectory began with membership in the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), where he contested and won a senatorial seat for Bauchi South (2007–2010). During his tenure, he served on eight committees, including aviation and finance, and supported the 2010 transition of power to Vice President Goodluck Jonathan.

After leaving ANPP in favor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mohammed became Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from April 2010 until May 2015. His tenure included reforms such as land administration modernisation, infrastructure projects like the Kubwa expressway and Usama Dam, and initiatives like the FCT Internal Revenue Board.

In October 2016, he faced detention by EFCC over allegations linked to his past roles, a case later declared unconstitutional. His political alignment shifted again after PDP’s internal dynamics, culminating in his election as Bauchi State Governor in 2019—where he won against incumbent Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar in a close race (515,313 votes vs. 500,625) and secured judicial confirmation.

Since assuming office in May 2019, Mohammed has prioritised governance reforms, including combating ghost workers, recovering stolen funds, and improving education/health sectors. His administration launched programmes like the Kaura Economic Empowerment Programme (KEEP) for women and youths, alongside infrastructure projects such as affordable housing and state-wide road connections.
