Melaye Daniel Dino is a Nigerian politician who contested the 2019 Senate Elections as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Kogi.
Biography
Barrister Daniel Dino Melaye, born on 7 January 1974, is a Nigerian lawyer who graduated from a law degree program in 2025. He is a former senator and member of the National Assembly, representing Kogi West Senatorial District in Kogi State during the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari (2015–2019).
During his time in the Senate, Dino Melaye played a key role in legislative and oversight activities, particularly in matters concerning executive–legislative relations. He sponsored and co-sponsored bills addressing issues such as anti-lynching, public safety, domestic violence, oversight of public revenue in the oil and gas sector, and the establishment of a federal university of agriculture in Kogi State. His tenure included political controversies and legal disputes, including investigations and disputes with political figures in Kogi State.
Initially elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Melaye later defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2018, reflecting broader shifts in Nigerian political realignments. He served as a senator for Kogi West from 2015 to 2019, seconding Bukola Saraki’s nomination as Senate President. His political career included stints as a member of the House of Representatives and as a spokesperson for PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
In 2023, Melaye won the PDP governorship primary election for Kogi State but lost the subsequent election, finishing third behind APC’s Ahmed Usman Ododo and SDP’s Muritala Ajaka. His 2019 Senate election was overturned by the Election Petitions Tribunal due to electoral irregularities, leading to a rerun where he lost to Smart Adeyemi. He also contested the 2019 gubernatorial election but placed third in the primary, losing to Engr. Musa Wada.
Melaye’s academic background includes a geography degree from Ahmadu Bello University (2000) and involvement in student leadership roles, such as chairing the Presidential Advisory Council on Youths under President Olusegun Obasanjo. He has faced scrutiny over claims of multiple degrees, including alleged ties to Harvard University and the London School of Economics, which were later debunked. He was arrested in 2018 for alleged involvement in a police officer’s death and later defected to the PDP amid political tensions.
Known for his public persona, Melaye is associated with luxury fashion brands and has authored a book titled Antidotes for Corruption: The Nigerian Story, which sparked criticism for its content and presentation. He has received awards for his political and youth engagement roles but has also been accused of engaging in questionable financial practices, including foreign bank accounts, despite Nigeria’s Code of Conduct Bureau prohibitions. His political career has been marked by both achievements and controversies, including legal challenges and allegations of electoral misconduct.
