Katung Sunday Marshall

Sunday Marshall Katung, born on 1 April 1961 in Madakiya (now part of Zangon Kataf LGA, southern Kaduna State), is a Nigerian politician and lawyer who has held key roles in government and academia.

He began his education at Kufena College, Wusasa Zaria from 1975 to 1980, then attended the College of Arts & Science, Zaria (1980–1982) before progressing to the University of Lagos (1982–1986). His legal training included studies at Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos (1986–1987), culminating in qualifications as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Katung earned additional diplomas and degrees, including a Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) in 2000 and an MBA from Ahmadu Bello University in 2005. He also obtained an Advanced Diploma in Legal Drafting and Conveyancing from the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Lagos.

His professional experience includes serving as Commissioner for Water Resources and Finance in Kaduna State (July 2010–May 2011), acting as Company Secretary/Legal Adviser to Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation, and leading courses on public enterprise restructuring, corporate governance, and international contract negotiation.

Under the PDP banner, he was elected to represent Jaba/Zangon Kataf Federal constituency in Kaduna State’s House of Representatives (2015). His tenure emphasized principles like a free market economy with social conscience, family values, and human rights within federalism.

In 2018, Katung became the PDP deputy governorship candidate for Kaduna State. He later won the party’s primary election in May 2022 against incumbent Senator Danjuma Laah, securing 112 votes to 74. In the 2023 senatorial elections, he defeated Labour Party’s Michael Auta (101,479 vs. 138,246 votes), becoming Senator for Kaduna South.

Since his Senate inauguration in February 2023, he has served as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Ecology and Climate Change. His initiatives include proposing a Tertiary Research Trust Fund to support climate mitigation research (February 2024) and advocating for African-Caribbean collaboration at the UN General Assembly (September 2024).

He received the African Leadership Legislative Excellence Award in September 2024. Married to Nigerian-British Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, now Lord Mayor of Leeds, the couple have two twin sons from her previous marriage.
