Biography

Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (born 17 August 1941) is a Nigerian general and politician who rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army during the Nigerian Civil War before becoming Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He orchestrated a coup d'état against Muhammadu Buhari in 1985 and ruled as military president until his resignation in 1993.

His eight-year military rule, known as the Babangida Era, was marked by significant controversies, including widespread corruption estimated to involve at least 12 billion dollars (adjusted for inflation to 23.9 billion today). The regime established a state security apparatus, survived two coup attempts, and executed key figures like Mamman Vatsa (1985) and Gideon Orkar (1990).

The era also saw the assassination of prominent journalist Dele Giwa in 1986, alongside ethnic and religious tensions stemming from Babangida’s policies. Internationally, his rule strengthened Nigeria’s regional influence through diplomatic successes like the Abuja Treaty and military engagements in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Relations with the U.S. and UK were also maintained.

Domestically, Babangida’s regime implemented economic liberalization, privatization of state enterprises, and mass mobilization. His fall came with the transition to the Third Nigerian Republic and the militarized 1993 presidential election, which he annulled.
