Biography

Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan was born on 20 November 1957 in Otuoke, Bayelsa State, to a Christian Ijaw family of canoe makers. His father, Lawrence Ebele Jonathan, and mother, Eunice Ayi Ebele Jonathan, were originally from Ogbia, but their middle name, Ebele or Ebelechukwu, reflects Igbo cultural influence.

He attended primary and secondary schools with a Christian education background. After earning a bachelor’s degree in zoology (second-class honours), he pursued further studies in hydrobiology and fisheries biology before obtaining a doctorate in zoology from the University of Port Harcourt. Jonathan taught at Rivers State College of Education from 1983 to 1993.

Before entering politics, Jonathan worked as an education inspector, lecturer, and environmental-protection officer. His involvement with the nascent People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the late 1990s marked the beginning of his political career.

In the 1999 Bayelsa State gubernatorial election, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha ran under PDP and selected Jonathan as his running mate. They were reelected governor and deputy governor respectively until 2005, when Jonathan succeeded Alamieyeseigha as governor after he was removed from office by the state House of Assembly over allegations of money laundering.

Jonathan served as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State from 1999 to 2005. His tenure included a brief period as Acting President in February–May 2010, following Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s medical absence and subsequent death. He was then formally sworn in as substantive president on 6 May 2010.

As president, Jonathan implemented policies under the Transformation Agenda, focusing on anti-corruption, power sector reforms, and infrastructure development. His administration oversaw major projects like the Lagos-Benin Expressway, second Niger Bridge, and upgrades to airports such as Akanu Ibiam Airport in Enugu.

Despite economic growth during his tenure, Jonathan’s administration faced criticism for corruption, including allegations of mismanagement involving public funds, oil revenue diversion, and personal financial interventions. Economic reforms like the removal of fuel subsidies sparked protests but were later defended by international experts.

Politically, Jonathan’s presidency was marked by challenges such as Boko Haram insurgency, which intensified under his rule, though military campaigns later recaptured much of the affected regions. His administration also enacted controversial legislation, including the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act (2014).

Jonathan lost the 2015 presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari and conceded defeat, becoming the first incumbent president to lose re-election in Nigerian history. After leaving office, he has remained engaged in Bayelsa State’s development, holding roles such as honorary special advisor and international diplomatic positions.

Born into an Ijaw Christian family, Jonathan holds titles like Se lolia I of Wakirike Bese and is recognized for his contributions to education, governance, and regional development. His political career reflects a transition from academic and administrative roles to leadership at the national level.
