Biography

Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna was born on 6 August 1967 in Kano city to Alhaji Yusuf and Hajiya Fatima Shiekh Hassan Gawuna.

He descends from the Garba Gawuna and Sheikh Hassan Gawuna families through his paternal and maternal lineages respectively.

Growing up, he attended Gawuna Primary School from 1973 until 1979, followed by Government Secondary School Gwaram (now in Jigawa State) for junior secondary education.

He completed high school at Science Secondary School Dawakin Kudu in 1984 and later enrolled in Ahmadu Bello University’s preliminary studies in Zaria in 1985.

After finishing his preliminary studies, he pursued biochemistry at Usmanu Danfodio University, graduating in 1990.

Gawuna served as the Commissioner for Agriculture in Kano State under Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso from 2014 until his appointment as Deputy Governor in 2018.

He was appointed Deputy Governor of Kano State by Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje after Professor Hafiz Abubakar’s resignation on 5 August 2018 and remained so until 2023.

Ganduje retained Gawuna as his running mate in the 2019 general election, where he stayed until his subsequent role in governance.

He held the position of Chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Area for eight years under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) during Ibrahim Shekarau’s tenure as Governor.

Gawuna resigned from the Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources on 18 April 2022 to qualify for the 2023 Kano State gubernatorial election, supported by then-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
