Biography

Alhassan Ado Garba, popularly known as Alhassan Doguwa, was born on August 14, 1965 in a Hausa political family from Doguwa, Kano State.

He holds the honor of being a son of an influential First Republic NEPU politician who later joined the United Progressive Grand Alliance (UPGA), an opposition force against the Northern People’s Congress (NPC).

Honorable Garba earned a First Class degree in Mass Communications from Bayero University, Kano. After graduation, he immediately entered politics, becoming elected as a member of the House of Representatives under the defunct SDP in 1992.

A prominent supporter of Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s bid for Deputy Speaker during the Third Republic, Garba later served as Special Adviser to Kano State Governor on Environment (2000) and as a Special Adviser on Governmental Affairs and Political Party Affairs to Senate Presidents Adolphus Wabara and Ken Nnamani.

Returning to the House of Representatives in 2007, he became Deputy Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Committee. His re-election in 2011 underscored his reputation as a dependable parliamentary figure, serving as the MDGs-focused committee chairman and African Network of Parliamentarians on MDGs chairman.

In 2015, Garba was elected Chief Whip for the eighth assembly after Femi Gbajabiamila’s defeat in the Speakership bid. His acceptance of this role led to a rift with Gbajabiamila, disrupting their political alliance.

During the February 26, 2023 general elections in Tudun Wada Local Government Area (LGA), Doguwa was arrested after allegations of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and grievous injury during election collation. The Federal High Court granted him bail of ₦500 million with two sureties.

A firm believer in large families, Garba is married to four wives and has 28 children. He was conferred the traditional title of Sarkin Yakin Burum Burum and Yariman Dadin Kowa by Doguwa and Tudun Wada District Heads in 2013.

In October 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari awarded him the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), recognizing his national contributions.
