Biography

Adekoya Adesegun Abdel-Majid was born on 21 March 1961 in Ago-Iwoye, Ijebu North Local Government of Ogun State, and belongs to the Yoruba ethnic group.

His family background includes his father as Prince AbdurRaheem Ajanaku Adekoya from Ago-Iwoye and his mother as Princess Abigail Efunseeke Adikat Adekoya.

He began working in the Nigerian Bank for Commerce and Industry (NBCI) in Lagos on 17 August 1981. His involvement with National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) included advocacy for MKO Abiola’s presidential mandate restoration after election annulment in 1993.

He resigned from his banking position in 1995 and entered grassroots politics, first as a Councillor of Ward F2 in Somolu Local Government before becoming its Vice Chairman. In December 1996, Kosofe Local Government was carved out of Somolu, making him the First Executive Chairman from March 1997 to July 1998.

Following his tenure as local government chairman, he served as personal assistant to Jubril Martins-Kuye, Minister of State for Finance (Abuja), between 1999 and 2003. From 2003 to 2007, he was Commissioner 1 in the Local Government Service Commission under Gbenga Daniel’s administration.

He later held appointments as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs (2007–2008) before being reassigned to the State Ministry of Works (2008–2011).

A member of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he is one of three South West representatives on its National Executive Council, representing Ogun State exclusively.

Abdel-Majid first contested the 2011 House of Representatives election for Ijebu-North/Ijebu-East/Ogun Waterside constituency but lost. He was re-elected in 2015 after an APC challenge was dismissed by the Election Petition Tribunal, serving as a member of the 8th National Assembly.

His roles include Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Land Transport and membership of committees on Marine Safety, Education & Administration, ICT, FCT Area Councils, Culture/Tourism, Public Petitions, Civil Societies, and Delegated Legislation. In October 2015, he co-led a motion investigating CCTV contract awards to ZTE Corporation during the Goodluck Jonathan administration.
