Abbas Aminu Iya is a Nigerian politician who contested the 2023 Nigerian Senate Elections as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Adamawa.
Biography
Aminu Iya Abbas, born in June 1973, is a Nigerian politician representing Adamawa Central in the Senate.
He served as Speaker of Adamawa State House of Assembly between 2019 and 2023, having held two terms as Member of the House before that.
Born in Yola, he attended Central Primary School in Uba, Hong, Adamawa. He earned a BSc in Accounting from Bayero University Kano (BUK) in 2000 and later obtained an MSc in Treasury Management from the same institution in 2008.
His National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service was at Nigeria National Liquified Natural Gas between 2001β2002. He worked as a forensic expert and pioneer accountant for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission before joining Africa Petroleum Nigeria and KPMG from 2008 to 2011.
A Chartered Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner, Iya ran for Adamawa State House of Assembly in 2011, winning the Uba/Gaya constituency. He held multiple roles within the assembly, including Chief Whip, Deputy Minority Leader, and Minority Leader between 2011β2015.
He lost his seat in the 2015 election but remained affiliated with PDP. Re-elected in 2019, he became Speaker until his victory in the 2023 Senate elections for Adamawa Central.
As Senator, Iya chairs the Senate Committee on Science and Technology. He sponsored a motion addressing flooding in Adamawa State, attributing it to water release from Lagdo Dam by Cameroonβs authorities.
His proposal includes constructing the Dasin Hausa Dam as a preventive measure against future floods, citing past tragedies such as boat capsizing incidents along the Benue River.
