Political Career

Biography

Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi was born on May 27, 1965, in Ubima Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

His family background includes the late Elder Fidelis Amaechi and Mary Amaechi, with first and last names meaning ‘God is strength’ and ‘who knows tomorrow,’ respectively.

Raised in Diobu, Port Harcourt, he completed primary education at St. Theresa’s Primary School (1970–1976) before earning his West African Senior School Certificate from Government Secondary School Okolobiri in 1982.

Amaechi earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Studies and Literature from the University of Port Harcourt in 1987, where he led the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS).

After his NYSC service (1988–1989), he worked at Pamo Clinics and Hospitals Limited until 1992 before entering politics as secretary to the National Republican Convention in Ikwerre.

He joined the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) during General Sani Abacha’s rule, later becoming a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly (1999–2007).

As speaker of the assembly, he improved executive-legislative relations with Governor Peter Odili before launching a campaign against him in 2007.

He won the PDP governorship primary election and became governor of Rivers State on October 26, 2007, after a Supreme Court ruling supported his candidacy.

His administration focused on infrastructure development, including roads, bridges, and power projects like Afam and Trans Amadi plants. He was re-elected in 2011 for a second term.

In 2013, Amaechi defected from the PDP to the APC, becoming its director general for Muhammadu Buhari’s presidential campaign.

After Buhari’s election, he served as federal minister of transportation (2015–2022), overseeing rail and port reforms, including standard gauge railway expansions and deep-sea port projects like Lekki Deep Seaport.

He also established training programs for engineers in China, secured international scholarships, and modernized Nigeria’s maritime sector through initiatives like the Maritime Bank and NIMASA’s cadet programs.

Despite corruption allegations against him by Governor Nyesom Wike—including claims of misappropriating ₦96 billion from state funds—Amaechi has denied wrongdoing.

In 2021, he earned a law degree certification after announcing his convocation on November 19, 2022. He is married to Judith Amaechi and holds the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Amaechi joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in March 2026, completing registration in Ward 8, Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area.

He contested the ADC presidential primaries in May 2026 but lost to Atiku Abubakar. His political career spans local governance, national politics, and federal service.
