Biography

Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (; born 20 March 1964, popularly known as 'Gburugburu') is a Nigerian politician who served as the Governor of Enugu State from 2015 to 2023. He was a member of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, representing Igboeze North/Udenu federal constituency from 2003 to 2015, and is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Early life and education: Ugwuanyi was born in Orba Town, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu North Zone in Enugu State. He attended St. Theresa's College, Nsukka. He holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Ugwuanyi served as the General Manager of Premier Insurance Brokers Limited, Enugu, and was the president of the Rotary Club of Emene in Enugu State.

Political career: Ugwuanyi was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2003 and served as the chairman of the House Committee on Marine Transport for two terms. He also chaired the House Committee on Pensions, helping to enact the Pension Reform Act 2004. After winning the PDP’s gubernatorial ticket in a primary election on 8 December 2014, Ugwuanyi was sworn in as Governor on 29 May 2015. A subsequent court challenge by Senator Ayogu Eze over the primaries was dismissed, affirming Ugwuanyi’s legitimacy as the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate. During his tenure, he initiated development projects in Enugu State and received the Metro Eireann International Outstanding Leadership Award in 2016 for his legislative contributions.
